CASA COLONIAL MARUCHI
Maruchi Berbes is a researcher at Casa del Caribe and is fluently bilingual. He collects santeria artefacts (Maruchi is a santeria symbol) and rents two air-conditioned bedrooms from a lovely central patio off a superb arched double living room.

The rooms in front are furnished colonial style and the centre patio is full of plants, chairs and table, a statue which looks buddhist and santeria-like and a parrot (cotorra) as full of itself as the peacock (pavo real) it has replaced.

Each bedroom has a double bed and its own private bathroom; one has an extra single but no ensuite bathroom; the other has table and chairs. Both rooms open from the patio.

Rough Guides says : "Two rooms are available in this magnificent colonial house. Vintage brass beds, exposed brickwork and wooden beams add romance, while a well-tended patio filled with lush plants and a menagerie of birds and other pets is the perfect spot for the al-fresco breakfast, included in the price. "

Rates : 20-30cuc per night per bedroom with breakfast included.

Note : Casa runs much better when Maruchi is there in person and runs the place; otherwise, overbearing ceremonies might occupy the whole place. As this casa is also in the New York Times recommendations and most guide books, we assume it must be pretty popular so book ahead of time. «One of the best casas in Cuba, according to Claire Boobyer — Frommer's Cuba 2011 »
